Topic: How racist is Japan?

  !Tkun4nmzJI started this discussion 6.8 years ago #887

1. They don't want to be invaded by poor people from othe countries but US and Europe don't want it too.

2. In my country you get nacionality by being born here, In Japan it depends on your family but seems like in Europe it is the same.

3. I have heard a lot about violence against immigrants in US and Europe (Latinos, Arabs, Africans, etc) but not much in Japan (maybe due to their low criminality?) What I see is foreign looking people making them curious like if they were little kids (we have something like this here too but it is harder to look like a foreigner here)

I have worked as immigrant in Japan for a short time and I don't think I was mistreated, I have heard positive and negative stories but I'm not sure how trustfull they are. Older people might have retained the racism from the war but I don't see more racism in the current generation than I heard about in other developed countries. Since I have never been in US/Europe I would like to know how things are there from people who have been there.

1. you know that episode of samurai champloo where mugen and jin lose their swords to that blond foreigner in the eating contest?
that is pretty much japan's views on foreigners

2. they do it behind your back like those yellow-ass church-goers.

What I wanted to ask is how things are in other countries with immigration issues.

I mean, In US a Brazilian was beaten to death because they misttok him as an Arab (double racism!)

Rampant racism here in America. There were literal race wars between blacks and whites at one school around here when a bus a Jamacan kids were going to stay at the school for a while. And an Asain friend of mine was supposed to sing the national anthem for a girls basketball game. But the girls on the our schools basketball team made a perition to the school principal to have her taken off. Fuck I hate being white.
In japan, they fucking love white people. Someone I knew when to Japan and random people stopped her on the street just to have her photo taken with her just because she was white/American. I also read that it is cool to be a half-breed in Japan.

The Japanese treat gay women like subhuman playthings though. Gay men are not treated so bad, but gay women, it's horrible for them. Even the mainstream media has been known to make fun of lesbians. Hell, they think women can't even be gay. They think if a woman says they are gay, then they are just confused and need a good raping to show them that dick is A-OK. I've seen some pretty offensive manga like that. The MC is a gay women who gets suck in a harem of hot men and the man who ends up raping her in the story is the one she falls in love with.

Anyway the notion of Japan from part of my family and what I found there where very different. I see homofobic and xenofobic characteristics in part of my family but they came from Japan but I think this is because they still retain the war age mentality.

You know, late at night there are many weirdos at comvenience stores. A gang of young weird guys aproached us asking us stuff like where we were from and stuff. What was in my mind at the time was "We are fucked!" you know, being surrounded in a foreign land by what seemed like a gang of delinquents... but they were surprisingly friendly and interested!

On another note we are guilty of making fun of them behind their backs since we couldn't avoid noticing the bad/lack of teeth of the gang. But seriously, it is hard to pay attention to what someone is saying when half of the teeth are missing and the other half is brown!

Japan is the most racist country

Many Japanese people are extremely racist. They think every non-Japanese person except White people are inferior. Japanese people especially love to insult Koreans and Chinese. On 2ch and 2chan, there are many racists who insult Korea. There is even a special board called "Nida" on 2ch for people to insult Korea. Japan is the most racist country in the world. I am very ashamed of this sad fact.

私も日本人です。
I am Japanese also.

I have a hard time believing this.

Any idiot can write something in Japanese and claim to be Japanese.

Most likely a troll. It's hard to see a Japanese that can write english that well...

Anyway Japan, China and Korea do have issues due to war wounds but newer generations doesn't seems to have much issues. At least in media those 3 countries watch/play/hear the animes/games/music from each other.

Of course there are extreme racists in Japan, so there are in any other country. Use internet boards as example how is that different from 4chan? annonymity + audience = fucktard

We see violent racist groups in the news in US, Europe and even in Brazil (group of youngsters beat to death some random person for his race) but don't remember seeing these kind of news from Japan. Usually the crime news from Japan are more in the crazy murder side like Nevada and not race-hate side like neo-nazis.

Nevada-tan has spawned a whole slew of fan art (wrap your mind around that) and fanfiction.

Really weird how they try to make her seem almost "cute".

With my poor Japanese skills I would translate it as "I'm Japanese too"
私 = boku = I (non-polite form, usually used by boys and tomby girls)
私も = boku mo = I'm too
日本 = Nihon = Japan
人 = Hito/Jin = Person, people
日本人 = nihonjin = Japanese (for nacionality)
です = desu = it is.

So the translation would be "I'm Japanese too" Since his Emglish is very good I don't think he misstranslated it due to lack of knowledge of the English language so the only alternative is that he doesn't dominate the Japanese language as well as English. The conclusion is: he is either a non-Japanese speaker trying to pretend to be Japanese or he is a Japanese person that growed in another country.

Or he just used Google translate or something similar.

You know, when I get mail from Japan, it says "Nippon" on it. But in movies and anime they say "Nihon." Why is this?

Both are correct. the Kanji 本 can be read as Hon or as Pon. I only knew the meaning of it as "book" but searching I found that it means origin too http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E6%9C%AC and now everything makes sense.

Like always, wikipedia have a more complete answer.
> The Japanese names for Japan are Nippon (にっぽん About this sound listen (help·info)) and Nihon (にほん About this sound listen (help·info)). They are both written in Japanese using the kanji 日本. The Japanese name Nippon is used for most official purposes, including on Japanese money, postage stamps, and for many international sporting events. Nihon is a more casual term and the most frequently used in contemporary speech.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_of_Japan

Back to the troll.

If he used google translate he translated the English sentence "I`m Japanese also" to Japanese. If you translate 私も日本人です。to English you get "The Japanese too."

So anyone using google to translate from English to Japanese to say "I'm Japanese" in Japanese obviously know more about English than Japanese.
