For me, it was Sailor Moon when I was a 8-11 years old.

I always got soooo mad at the Dark Kingdom's incompetence, lol. :D

My sister used to watch Sailor Moon, so I saw a bit of that. I liked Pokemon and loved Digimon. I wasn't allowed to watch Cardcaptors or Dragon Ball Z.

Christian parents. I wasn't allowed to watch anything with magic, or play games where you kill people (killing aliens/monsters was ok).

I didn't like idea behind the creature your supposedly the master of having the same level of intelligence as you. The speak your language and everything. Made me uncomfortable. Usually thing like this are you allies in some great war of different, equal spices in a fantasy or sci-fi anime.

Digimon does not have disparite relationships like pokemon. Instead the human and digimon are referred to as partners. There is a "monogamous" relationship in digimon allowing true friendships to bloom, as opposed to the hundreds of pokemon slaves (who spend most of their lives in computers) a trainer typically accumulates. Instead of being forced to battle to earn money for their pimp, digimon only fight out of love, to protect their partner, or out of justice, to protect weak digimon from evil ones.

It is! If you delete the Digimon world tour episodes, the final battle and the epilogue Digimon Adventure 02 is great as well! Digimon Tamers is good too. Everything after that looks really lame.

Fuck, did I never read this? That makes me a sad trainer. :C I saw an epi of the Digimon anime once. It looks terrible. The main and a guy in the green shirt was in a fist fight. It was animated terribly and censored so you never actually saw the fist connect with the cheek. You saw a guy magicaly float off the ground and go "take this! HAAAaaaa..." and then the other kid would stiffly fall over.
And then float up and "punch" the other guy again.
Animation and censorship aside, what this guy says makes me actually get into it. Even if I am a decade late to the party.

I sort of agree. He does make it sound good, but he does so at the expense of completely dismissing Pokemon without consideration, which leads me to believe he is simply biased.

> Digimon does not have disparite relationships like pokemon. Instead the human and digimon are referred to as partners. There is a "monogamous" relationship in digimon allowing true friendships to bloom
Pokemon are also referred to as partners. Watch the first 3 episodes, Pikachu and Ash definitely have a friendship.

> as opposed to the hundreds of pokemon slaves (who spend most of their lives in computers) a trainer typically accumulates.
Team Rocket treats them as slaves. Take note that Team Rocket always loses to Ash. Also, Pokemon are sent to Prof. Oak's Pokemon Ranch, they are only transferred via computer.

> Instead of being forced to battle to earn money for their pimp, digimon only fight out of love, to protect their partner, or out of justice, to protect weak digimon from evil ones.
> Pimp
Ok, that's just ignorant. Quit using the game as a comparison to a TV show. Money is part of the game because there's no other way to obtain items (which make your Pokemon happy) except by finding them, which gives you a very limited play experience before your resources are exhausted. The show never once makes any hint that trainers battle to obtain cash prizes. Pokemon that are forced to fight are repeatedly shown to be weaker than friendly ones, because they feel neglected and unhappy.

My very first encounter with anime was Astroboy (the original), around the time I started elementary school. Back then, it was called "Japanimation". Other popular anime of the period included Prince Planet, Gigantor, Eighth Man and Marine Boy.

Speaking of which, I got back into anime years later, after I started watching an old 70s magic girl series called Majokko Megu-chan. It's amazing to compare American and Japanese cartoons of the same period. I mean, you never would've seen something like this in Scooby-Doo or Funky Phantom.

Anonymous T double-posted this 7.2 years ago, 28 minutes later, 5 months after the original post[Top] #7,983

Of course, there was also a lot of T & A in the original version of Cutey Honey - not the first Japanese cartoon to feature total nudity, but probably the first to include overtly ecchi humor:

Precisely the same features which caught my attention. Watched a few episodes and realized there was more to Japanese animation than meets the eye. The series was produced by Toei Doga in 1974; according to wikipedia.jp, the studio was attempting to expand into the Western market at the time. Predictably, the cartoon wasn't picked up by European networks until the 1980s, probably due to its sexual references and adult themes (teen suicide, domestic violence etc). Although virtually unknown in the States, it's widely considered the prototype for many later magic girl shows (many key elements were recycled in Sailor Moon, for example).

Funny how Europeans are far more open to sexualized cartoons than their American counterparts.
