Topic: Anime + Plex

Our Chinese student uses Plex to stream downloaded TV shows to the television. It's pretty nice, and unlike over-the-net streaming services you can backtrack without having to wait for buffering if your ear didn't catch what was being said, or the subtitles moved faster than your eyes.

So this was how I came to watch Pokemon Origins one afternoon on the big TV in the family room. (This TV also happens to be the oldest of our Smart TVs.) The particular version of Pokemon Origins that I downloaded had ASS subs.

Fast-forward to now where I currently have a (newer) Smart TV all to myself. I'm running low on HD space and I'm at a bit of a lull right now with Netflix so I figured I'd try to free up some space by watching some of the anime I've been hoarding for the last 3 years. I tried Excel Saga, but the stream wouldn't start. Looking at it now, it's probably because it's in ogm which is an old, unofficial ogg branch and even mplayer on Windows doesn't seem to like it, though I never had any problems with it on Ubuntu. So I tried Azumanga Daioh and Kiddy Grade, both in Matroska containers. When I select subtitles though, the stream won't start, again. However, if I don't turn on subs, it's fine. Both of these shows also have ASS subs. (Remembering that ASS worked on the older TV, so you would think the newer one should also support them since they're pretty popular.) Eventually I try Samurai Champloo, which happens to have 4 subtitle tracks: ASS, SRT, VOBsub, and ASS signs. It seems that SRT is the only one that works on this TV through Plex.

Apparently Samsung Smart TVs are only a worth a passing mention in the larger Samsung article on Wikipedia and there is, surprisingly, no "comparison of home theater software compatility" article.

I could extract the ASS subs and convert them to SRT, but that's tedious. I just want to know if it's Plex or the TV that has the problem, but how do I figure that out?

Turns out something was not working correctly with my computer at the time. I was able to stream with the ASS subtitles just fine yesterday.

I suppose I also ought to correct my statement about OGM, it actually streams just fine to my TV. Strange that mPlayer has trouble with it.
