Could it be the next pokemon?

I doubt it. Looks a little too kooky for an American audience. Plus it would need a groundbreaking video game tie-in.

It starts as 3ds game (the third of the series will come out this 11th) and then get an tv animation. I watched the anime, it is HILARIOUS!

Wow. It'll be interesting to see how it does in international markets.

The themes are a bit weird for other countries since they are based on japanese mythological creatures unlike Pokemon that originally was mostly based on animals, on the other hand people weren't familiar with nordic creatures but this doesn't stopped RPGs with elfs, trolls, and other nordic creatures.

Right now Yokai Watch is everywhere here.

I think elves and trolls and the like became widespread because they were adopted much earlier as video game entities. But then, Skifree had a yeti and those are still pretty rare. Maybe because it's a snow monster and not seen as adaptable to other climates?

D&D may have also had something to do with it. MTG had a lot of very Japanese-inspired monsters coming out when I was in high school.

I saw a commercial for the video game over thanksgiving break. I guess we'll see if I have to eat my words.

Isn't anime not considered popular in Japan anyway?
