Topic: Megaupload was shut-down by US!

Mod started this discussion 6 years ago #1,061

It begins!
> 5 other less interesting Megaupload executives have been indicted, of whom 3 have already been arrested. All of those indicted were citizens of various European countries and resided either in Europe, Hong Kong or New Zealand.

> Strangely, Megaupload’s American CEO and noted rapper Swizz Beatz is apparently not named in the indictments.

Fuck! I was planning to move to New Zealand!

How does the US arresting non-US citizens work?

Washington wanted to send us a message. They wanted us to know that they do not explicitly *need* the SOPA and the PIPA to censor the Internet and all the bills do is it makes it legal to do so instead of there just not being a law that says they can't censor the Internet. Message revived asshole. Now I've lost some video of my sisters birthday thanks to you.
The problem is that your actions do not instil fear in us like you want them, they instil contempt. This is the flaw in your master plan, and it will mean your downfall.

Is there any specific reason megaupload was taken down? As opposed to rapidshare or the many other high profile hosts?

Extradition treaties?

watching all those sites react to one site getting taken down like that is absolutely disgusting; the fbi should have to work their ass off to enforce their ridiculous laws.

> china / korea will not join the SOPA / PIPA
how ironic that those counties would be one of the few that don't tolerate that shit

While China seems to be pro-censorship they have a unique view of intelectual property.

Indeed...
When governments that actively police what their citizens are and aren't allowed to access online think you're out of your mind; you're out of your mind. Period.

@11,883
> This is US saying: You don't want SOPA? We don't need it to fuck with you!
You know, as much as I think people who DDoS the government are idiots, I really can't say I disapprove if this is what the division in our country has come down to. Personally, I tell record companies what to do by only buying a CD after I've heard the whole thing enough to decide that I won't get sick of it in time. But when I'm only one person who buys maybe 3 CDs in a year, they aren't going to notice. And not buying music to spite them just makes them push harder for stuff like SOPA/PIPA. How do you vote with your wallet when witholding the jewgold only makes shit like this happen? Politicians can't be relied on because the very nature of money gives it absolute power over the will of a human being. Is there really nothing we can do to make things better without first allowing them to get significantly worse??

I think the future of media (music, anime, movies, comics, etc) will be in systems like you use to buy some games (steam, humblebundle, etc) and sites like Ken Amatsu's one where the money comes from ads and go directly to the artist.

At least makes more sense than than most of the money going to the company that record the music on the CD instead of going to the person who composed and performed it.

Filesharing witch hunt...
For fuck's sake, the Internet hasn't been around for 50 years yet. Are we really this quick to destroy something?
