Its official, i am spending a month in Japan this year! I am so excited :D
Help me build my itinerary? I
fly in to Tokyo on the 19th. Anyone here actually in Japan who might want to meet up?

Get one JR railpass before going to Japan! With it you can use JR trains as many times as you want (with the exception of the expressos)

The JAPAN RAIL PASS offers an incredibly economical way to travel throughout Japan by rail. Please be aware, however, that some restrictions apply. The pass is not valid for “NOZOMI” and “MIZUHO” trains on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen lines.
October 21, 2010The JAPAN RAIL PASS can now be used for the Tokyo monorail.

Have you seen the prices of transporting in Japan? I bought one Rail Pass that last for one week and in 1 days it already paid itself! A one way travel from one big city to another in a bullet trains will cost from $100 to 300!

Japanese train times & fares
Journey: Distance Time by Nozomi * Time by Hikari * One-way fare: Train frequency:
Tokyo - Kyoto 513km, 320 miles 2 hours 18 min 2 hours 49 mins ¥13,720 (£101, $161) Every 5-10 minutes, direct.
Tokyo - Shin-Osaka 552km, 345 miles 2 hours 18 min 2 hours 33 mins ¥14,250 (£105, $168) Every 5-10 minutes, direct.
Tokyo - Hiroshima 894km, 559 miles 4 hours 8 min 5 hours 2 mins ¥18,620 (£137, $220) Every 10-20 minutes, direct.
Tokyo - Nagasaki 1,328km, 830 miles 7 hours 14 min 8 hours 21 mins ¥24,980 (£183, $294) Every hour or better, change at Hakata.
Kyoto - Hiroshima 380km, 237 miles 1 hour 36 min 1 hour 59 mins ¥11,290 (£83, $133) Every 10-20 minutes, direct..
Hiroshima - Nagasaki 434km, 271 miles 3 hours 10 min 3 hours 25 mins ¥12,090 (£89, $142) Every hour or better, change at Hakata.
* Nozomi = fastest Shinkansen train type, Japan Rail Passes not valid. Hikari = next fastest Shinkansen train type, Japan Rail Passes valid.

Ps: JR Rail Pass don't give you access to Nozomi trains.
Ps2: Get the ordinary one, better save your money for other interesting stuff.

But if you are staying in Japan time is money! (hotels are not cheap) so by travelling by bullet trains you save time and are able to see more stuff in one day! Try to travel during day on the closer cities and use the longer travels to sleep (like the Tokyo - Hiroshima or the Tokyo - Nagasaki).

Also, that gives you the right of unlimited use of the trains, if you can do that you can even sleep in the circular in Tokyo (and take a bath in a onsen! And no, you can't buy the JR Rail Pass in Japan, you have to buy it before you go!

By the way, you can search for tradicional mixed public bath but probably all you will see will be old people naked.

If you are going to buy anime figures Akihabara might be the otaku Holy Land but you might find better deals on big used stuff stores on smaller cities because the better deals on Akihabara are quickly bought by another otaku while on more distant stores you can mine awesome stuff!
(I don't know what they are called but they have anime, games, general used stuff, adult toys, etc but it isn't a normal departament store)

They have new stuff too, games, figures in the box, garage kits, etc. One of the good deals I did there was a big bin full of plushies with discount like 5 per 1000 yen (something like 5 per 10 dollars) and some bags with 5 per 500 yen. They had what seemed to be remains of UFO catchers (they had one UFO catcher machine in the store too) so I got one bag with 5 (one of them being a big super mario mushroom) per 500 yen!

That said, though, I would if the seven day pass were for non-consecutive days. Fact is, the pass would run out between stays, and I would only need it once a week.

you can use it even in normal trains you know? The point would be to save one week and travel like crazy! When I was In Japan I had only one week of vacation and I used the Rail Pass like Crazy! Actually, in one day you could visit the temples on Kyoto and The castle of Osaka and give a walk on Tokyo night that would pay the Rail Pass already. So you save money even if you use it only once.

I should get a week one, probably, but I don't want to waste money on a 21 dayer that I won't use. $700 is an insane amount of money... I suppose my problem is that I can't justify that kind of expense.

YOU HAVE CONVINCED ME SIR! I AM GOING TO PURCHASE A ONE-WEEKER, AS I WAS GOING TO HAVE TO USE THE BULLET TRAIN ONCE AT LEAST. SO, CONGRATULATIONS. $300 IS NOT AN UNREASONABLE EXPENSE CONSIDERING THAT I WAS GOING TO HAVE TO PAY $150 TO GET FROM HIROSHIMA TO TOKYO ANYHOW. THANK YOU KIND SIR FOR YOUR CONVINCINGNESS.

I don't think a 21 days is worthy I think it would be better to know well the city you are in and take the 7 day to know the country in a travelling spree...

21 days are only for people with a lot of money.

Another good thing about the rail pass is that you can go to tokyo just because you feel like going there! You won't pay anything more for that (also, Tokyo is huge! You will need more than one day for that!)

That is correct. My itinerary currently:

Tokyo (7 days)
Kyoto (5 days)
Osaka (7 days)
Hiroshima (3 days) - this city broke my 5-letter lineup which made me angrier than it should have
Tokyo (6 days)
Somewhere (2 days)

Only time I absolutely need the pass is from Hiroshima to Tokyo.

@previous
What if you stay in one city and make daily visits to the other? Also, you have a lot of time to run around in Japan, I'm jelly!

But are you going by yourself or with other people? I would suggest for you to spend one week running from city to city and them you decide how to spend the remain time. In other words: visit Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Hiroshima in one week and them you ponder what places you will want to see more of it and what places you already saw all you wanted.

-iPad jackass- replied with this 6.2 years ago, 3 minutes later, 5 days after the original post[Top] #11,466

Already booked accommodation, but that would have been a good idea. I figure this way gives me a smorgasbord of cities instead of just being in one. Reason for being Tokyo-centric is because airports. I should probably have gone Osaka instead but oh well~ there's always next time!

Also, all alone. Come with?

Let me put in other worlds.

Let's say that your country produces 99.9% of the mayonnaise of the world. Like it or not you end up eating mayo every day be it in breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks or desserts. You have many mayo clubs, mayo stores, mayo forums and mayo sites in your country. Why would you bother to come to a foreign site where people who loves mayo and the country it is produced discuss about mayo in a foreign language?

On the first night, I got in late because of turbulence, then I spent three hours watching the train I needed to get on come and go every ten minutes before I finally asked for directions (I can't bring myself to try Japanese, since I'm not confident in my enunciations). When I finally got off the train, I couldnt read the map I had, so I was texting my mum for directions to the hostel. As I was almost there, I ran out of credit. I had no idea how far away I was (literally just around the corner) so I wandered around fretting for half an hour before asking a convenience store guy if he could help me and I finally got there. It was 11:30pm by now, and I was worried because they said they would turn down anyone after 11:00pm. I rocked up anyways and got in, but I was about ready to just get back on a plane to familiarity QuickSmart.

Glad I didn't, but I was so close. I was terrified :L

INB4: Japan doesn't have such low crime rates it is just that culturally citzens don't report to the police when they are robbed Just like they don't report when they are raped or die. A city with high crime rates in a country with extreme low criminality like Japan is like a peacefull neighbourhood in a country like US or Brazil.

However I heard that the robbery of underwear is real. Not as often as in ecchi manga but still real.

Here in Brazil I already got my bike stolen or my house invaded when we were away but I never got personally addressed by a criminal but I must be an exception since a many people I know, maybe most of them, already got addressed by criminals.
